Venue Uplighting 101 – LED Lighting Basics

Marriott in Racine, WI

We get asked frequently all about LED lighting and LED lighting for venue’s.    As LED lighting becomes more and more popular, there are a ton of considerations that you will need think about when choosing a vendor for your uplighting.

There are different styles and quality levels when it comes to Wedding LED Lighting, and it’s super important to understand each.    First, there is a difference in brightness – the first generation of Wedding LED Lighting were 0.1 watt LEDs.  They were nice, but you literally had to shut off all the lights in your venue before you could see the effect.    Who wants to do that?   You don’t want your guests milling around in the dark at your reception, just so they can see the uplighting.

The second generation of Wedding LED Lighting were made up of 1.0 watt LEDs.  These were brighter than the first generation LED fixtures.  Even with the venue lights at normal banquet level, you could clearly see the effect that they made in the venue.

The newest fixtures for Wedding LED Lighting are the 3.0 watt fixtures.  Some have tri-colored LEDs (no need for separate Red Green Blue LEDs), others added White or Amber LEDs to allow a bigger color pallet to be achieved in your wedding venue.

Conventional Par Can lighting with color gel filters have a difficult time reproducing Blues and Purples.  Wedding LED Lighting used to have a hard time with White and Amber hues.  This new generation of 3.0 watt Wedding LED Lighting eliminates the color matching concerns of earlier versions of LED lighting.

So, before you hire your DJ or lighting specialist for your wedding, be sure to ask some basic questions about their Wedding LED Lighting.

Are your fixtures 0.1 w, 1.0 w or 3.0 w LED fixtures?  What is their output?

How many fixtures do you typically use?  (10 – 20 fixtures are required for most facilities)

Are all your fixtures the same make and model?  If they mix and match styles of Wedding LED Lighting, the color will not be exact from one fixture to another.

Can you wirelessly control the color or brightness of your Wedding LED Lighting?  Do they stay the same all night long or will they change?

Will someone be on-site throughout the event to monitor the Wedding LED Lighting?  This will correct for things like fixtures being accidentally moved, bumped or unplugged as the lighting technician will monitor things.

  1. Do you have photos of the last couple events that you’ve used your lighting at?  Be sure they can identify the facility and event (to make sure they are not showing you someone else’s photos and not their own Wedding LED lighting examples).

Wedding LED Lighting can make your reception dramatic and stunning if done correctly.  It also can turn your special day into a circus if done incorrectly.  Know what you are getting for Wedding LED Lighting.  Get it in writing!

Please note – not all lighting vendors are alike.  Many inexperienced lighting technicians or DJs are using inferior low output LED fixtures.  Our high output fixtures put out around 10,000 LUX (3.0 watt fixtures).  That is bright enough to make your venue absolutely amazing.  Less than that and the lights won’t have much effect at all.  Be sure to check out photos from any lighting vendor and verify that they can do what they propose.

Want your name or monogram in lights?  We can create custom light gobos for your first dance.  Place it on the dance floor, wall or ceiling.  We can also match your napkins, invitation, or program design with your floor or wall monogram.

There’s no better time than a wedding to get creative. And sometimes that means breaking with tradition.

Although there are many accepted (and expected) traditions that surround weddings, who says you can’t buck convention and create your own traditions?

Don’t want to wear a white dress? Wear any color you want. Want a ‘no aisle’ ceremony? Go for it.

Here are a few unconventional ceremony ideas to take you down the aisle less traveled.

1. Let your guests mingle over cocktails before the ceremony. (Ideal if you are not having a church wedding.)
2. Greet guests as they arrive at the ceremony site.
3. Face your guests during your wedding vows..
4. Have your guests sit or stand in a circle around you during your vows.
5. Have both parents walk you down the aisle.
6. Have your husband-to-be escort you to the altar.
7. Don’t have bridesmaids.
8. Have an uneven number of attendants. (Maybe you just want a maid of honor, but he wants three groomsmen.)
9. Have a “man of honor” instead of a maid of honor. (Your brother? A good male friend?)
10. Have the groom choose a “best woman.” (His sister? A good female friend?)
11. Don’t wear a veil.
12. Have bridesmaids carry candles instead of bouquets as they walk down the aisle.
13. Write your own vows.
14. Have a ring warming. (What’s a ring warming you ask? There are different versions of this, but generally the rings are placed in a small bag and are passed around to each guest prior to the ring exchange. Each guest blesses the rings or says a prayer.)
15. Choose unconventional processional and/or recessional music. (Love U2? Use a favorite U2 song. Love Leonard Cohen? Choose one of his songs. You don’t have to stick with Pachelbel’s Canon or Ode to Joy.)
