Creative Way to Honor Deceased at a Wedding Ceremony

During our consultations with currently booked couples, we often get asked if we have suggestions for recognizing “relatives & family members” who have passed away, we’ve got a creative way to honor deceased at a wedding ceremony.

Add a Flower To The Bridal Bouquet

Sadly, many brides and grooms have lost a parent prior to their wedding day. Their presence, however, can be brought into your ceremony by honoring their memory with a simple, personalized ritual such as adding a flower to the bridal bouquet.

Here are instructions for the ritual honoring the deceased mother-of-the-bride. It may be adapted, of course, to honor any family member(s).

Have your florist provide you with a special flower that can be easily slipped into your bouquet. After your arrival at the altar and before anything else happens, a previously designated relative brings your groom this special flower. He then slides it into the center of your bouquet, and the officiant says: On this day, we honor the memory of the bride’s beloved mother by adding a specially chosen flower to the bride’s bouquet.

Sweet. Simple. Joyful. Pretty.

Light a Memorial Candle

Place a memorial candle on a table near the alter or at the front of the area where you are getting married and have another family come up or you come up and light it at the beginning of your wedding ceremony.

Create a Photo Wall or Memorial Table

Similar to the above, place some pictures on a table honoring your loved one.

Another common way is to leave a photo, flower or reserved sign at the ceremony to save a spot for them.

Rather than a flower or photo, use something meaningful to them such as a special baseball cap, a musical instrument that they played, or even a ball of yarn and crocheting needles – anything that will make you remember them.

Balloon Release

At the end of your wedding ceremony, have a balloon release honoring those that have passed on, or designate a time in your wedding ceremony like an interlude and do a balloon release honoring your loved ones from the past.

The possibilities are truly endless for what is possible for loved ones who have passed on.
